Baklingual Solutions proudly offers a flexible, self-paced 40-Hour Medical Interpreter Course, designed for interpreters seeking a refresher or 40-hour prerequisite certificate, as well as beginners committed to structured independent study. Participants follow the same comprehensive curriculum as our instructor-led program, with the flexibility of learning at their own pace. The course includes curated study materials, practical exercises, and a realistic mock exam in the participant’s target language, followed by a live oral exam that includes two hours of personalized coaching and detailed feedback from a certified instructor, which must be successfully completed to receive the 40-hour certificate.
Baklingual Solutions proudly offers a flexible, self-paced 40-hour medical interpreter self-study course designed for experienced and new medical interpreters who need a refresher or skill upgrade, as well as those who have completed medical interpreter training in the past but still require a 40-hour prerequisite certificate. This program is also open to beginners who are prepared to commit the necessary time and discipline to study the terminology and complete all required practice exercises. Participants will independently cover the same agenda as our 40-hour instructor-led course (see detailed syllabus below), with the added benefit of learning at their own pace.
The only difference from the instructor-led option is the absence of live classroom practice in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation exercises. Instead, interpreters are expected to practice these skills independently by completing the practical exercises and mock test included in the self-study course before taking the oral exam.
To complete the course and earn the 40-hour certificate, participants must pass Baklingual’s oral exam with a minimum score of 70%. This exam evaluates both theoretical and practical skills in core areas such as medical terminology, professional ethics, human body systems, the U.S. healthcare system, and consecutive interpretation. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in a live consultation with a certified instructor prior to the exam, where they can ask questions and receive personalized feedback. During the exam itself, interpreters will continue to receive individualized coaching to strengthen both theoretical and practical skills. If the minimum passing score is not achieved on the first attempt, participants will have an opportunity to retake the exam.
One of the program’s greatest strengths is its concise, bullet-point study materials and glossaries, which present complex medical concepts in a structured and accessible format, making them easy to understand and convenient to revisit at any time. This organized approach helps learners efficiently absorb and retain the core knowledge required for professional medical interpretation.
Another key strength of the course is its two hours of personalized coaching and detailed feedback during the oral exam, including a 30-minute live consultation with a certified instructor. This individualized guidance helps identify specific areas for improvement and strengthens both theoretical understanding and practical interpreting performance.
Although the language of instruction is English, the training program is non-language-specific and designed to be suitable for interpreters working in any language pair.
Students receive core medical glossaries in their target language, practice exercises tailored to their language pair, and realistic interpreting scenarios designed for application in their working languages. Performance is assessed using industry best practices, allowing interpreters to apply the training directly to their professional work while preparing for national certification.
The course focuses on strengthening key competencies, including:
